A comprehensive and multidimensional lecture on Urinary Stone Disease and its Precautionary Measures was successfully organized by the Department of Physics at Shivaji University in joint association with the Neem Karoli Baba Charitable Trust on Monday, July 27, 2026. The event stood out for its unique interdisciplinary approach, blending medical science, the practical applications of physics, and industrial skill development. The lecture witnessed an overwhelming response from students, professors, and medical experts.

The program commenced with the traditional lighting of the lamp. Dr. M. R. Waikar delivered the introductory remarks, outlining the background and main objective of the event, while also providing detailed insights into the initiatives of the Physics Department and the Neem Karoli Baba Charitable Trust. Following this, Prof. Dr. R. G. Sonkawade felicitated the Chief Guest, Prof. Dr. Rajendra B. Nerli, and the Guest of Honor, Mr. Arun Aradhye, presenting them with traditional shawls, coconuts, and floral bouquets.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Arun Aradhye, Managing Director of Menon Bearings Ltd. and Menon Alkop Ltd., Kolhapur, shared valuable advice with the students. Highlighting India's current demographic dividend, he noted that while India boasts the largest youth population in the world, there is a severe shortage of skilled manpower. He emphasized that mere bookish knowledge is insufficient in today's competitive era. To bridge this gap, he proposed a highly practical solution, suggesting that Shivaji University should establish stronger tie-ups with local industries and make practical training a mandatory part of the curriculum to help students understand direct industrial requirements.

Mr. Aradhye further urged students to urgently embrace modern technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security, Data Science, and Cloud Computing. He stressed that alongside technical knowledge, effective communication skills are absolutely crucial. Proving that age is not a barrier to learning, he cited his own ongoing educational pursuits. He urged the youth to stop wasting precious time on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram and instead invest it in acquiring new practical skills. He concluded his speech with the famous quote by former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, stating that a dream is not that which you see while sleeping, it is something that does not let you sleep.

In his keynote address, Prof. Dr. Rajendra B. Nerli shed light on the painful and severe medical issue of kidney stones. He noted that due to modern, stressful lifestyles, approximately ten percent of the population faces this problem today. Analyzing the primary causes, Dr. Nerli pointed out inadequate daily water intake, excessive consumption of salt and sugar through fast food, and the unregulated consumption of protein powders by gym-goers without proper medical consultation. He warned that this excessive intake puts undue stress on the kidneys, significantly increasing the rate of stone formation.

Reviewing the history of kidney stone treatments, Dr. Nerli explained that in the past, patients had to undergo highly painful open surgeries. Today, medical technology has taken a massive leap with minimally invasive procedures, with Shockwave Lithotripsy being the most widely used. He shared a fascinating anecdote connecting physics, history, and medicine, explaining that the foundational technology for shockwave treatment was derived from historical studies on how sound waves impacted airplanes, which was later adapted to break human kidney stones without surgery.

The lecture was followed by an engaging interactive session where Dr. Nerli patiently answered queries from students and faculty. When asked about the safety of using shockwave energy and its impact on other organs, he reassured the audience that the technology is highly safe. Because kidneys are located posteriorly in the human body, targeting them from behind with sound waves is convenient and poses no threat to other internal organs. However, he warned that if the powdered stone is not completely flushed out of the body, new stones can form around the remaining particles. Addressing a question about drinking water, he clarified that while well water in India is generally considered safe, the growing craze for energy drinks among today's youth multiplies the risk of developing kidney stones.

In the final segment of the program, Prof. Dr. R. G. Sonkawade delivered his presidential remarks. He expressed great satisfaction over how the event successfully demonstrated the strong, underlying connections between seemingly distinct fields like Physics, Medical Science, and Industrial Knowledge. He noted that such interdisciplinary lectures greatly expand students' intellectual horizons. The event concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. M. V. Takale, who expressed deep gratitude on behalf of Shivaji University and the Neem Karoli Baba Charitable Trust to the distinguished guests for sharing their invaluable time and profound guidance with the attendees.
